On the occasion of the Salone del Mobile, Besana Carpet Lab presents CHECKMATE—an exhibition space designed by Finemateria where architecture, geometry and technical craftsmanship converge in a fully immersive experience. The installation highlights the company’s ability to transform carpet into a powerful medium for storytelling and brand identity.
The Besana installation at Salone del Mobile 2026 unfolds as a striking, scenographic environment, further expressing the company’s exceptional ability to develop bespoke solutions through highly complex, couture-level craftsmanship.
Designed by creative duo Finemateria as a compact architectural volume, the installation features a façade defined by eight monumental columns, entirely clad in carpet. While the exterior conceals the interior, it reveals a precisely framed opening that, architecturally, invites visitors to step inside.
The space reveals itself gradually, inviting the eye to seek out glimpses and unexpected alignments. Carpet is expressed in an immersive, all-encompassing way, enveloping both horizontal and vertical surfaces, engaging in dialogue with the architecture and suggesting a fluid, contemporary notion of domesticity. Here, carpet moves beyond its role as a simple furnishing to become a powerful medium for storytelling and identity.
It is within this context that the inlay technique—at the heart of Besana Carpet Lab’s expertise—reveals its full expressive potential. The checkerboard floor, reinterpreted through saturated colours, is entirely crafted using inlay: squares composed of two materials with different thicknesses alternate to create a striking visual and tactile contrast, transforming the walking surface into a sculptural composition. Furnishings move across this grid like chess pieces, advancing and retreating, turning geometry into a performative gesture.
On the walls, the technical complexity becomes even more pronounced. One wall, in a light blue hue, is entirely clad in carpet crafted using an exceptionally precise inlay technique: vertical bands unfold in a rhythmic sequence, each containing a series of blocks—rigorously aligned and perfectly ordered—meticulously inset one by one. The result is a surface of extraordinary technical sophistication, transformed into a field of animated micro-geometries. On the darker blue wall, by contrast, a lighter form emerges from the background like an inlaid drawing: the plan-view outline of the table within the space, materialised on the wall through an inlay that creates a dialogue between object and architecture.
The exhibition unfolds through a sequence of rhythm and variation, constructing a progression of applications that showcase the material’s transformative potential. Shapes, cuts and colours follow one another like enlarged samples at the scale of the space, offering a three-dimensional reading of the product.
CHECKMATE is a statement of identity: an environment that expresses Besana Carpet Lab’s ability to shape carpet into tailor-made solutions, continuously transforming the product into a distinctive language. It is a space that celebrates the bold use of colour, the power of large-scale compositions and a complete mastery of technique, where every inlay stands as a tangible expression of exceptional craftsmanship.
